The Alternative Technology Centre was formed in June 1999 by a small group of local people. We aim to show people how they can live their lives more sustainably. We do this by providing information, demonstrations and lots of inspiration.
The centre is an educational charity and much of our work is with schools, but living 'sustainably' affects everyone and we try to appeal to as broad an audience as possible. We believe that the issues involved affect EVERY aspect of our lives, so we include art, finance, theatre and many other areas in our definition of 'Alternative Technology'. We also try to make things FUN.
We try to 'practice what we preach' and to make the centre financially self-sustaining. The centre has a Green Shop, which sells training, design and consultancy and operates tours of the centre. This is all done by the workers' co-operative that runs the centre (SUS Co-op Ltd.), all of the profits are dedicated to the ATC and other local environmental initiatives.
The majority of the work done at the centre is voluntary and we owe a huge debt of thanks to ALL who have helped make the centre grow from scratch to what it is now in less than three years.
