Skateboard Parks in Calderdale
Throughout Calderdale there has an increase in the number of skateboard parks available ranging in quality, colour and size.
Hebden Bridge's skateboarding area in the Calder Holmes Park is a mass of concrete and is relatively large in relation to the skateboarding parks in Todmorden and Ripponden. Due to it being concrete the ramps are fixed but sticks out like a sore thumb in its surroundings. People enjoy using this park as it offers a variety of options when doing tricks. If used correctly and safely the park will continue to be enjoyed by all who choose to use it.
Todmorden's Centre Vale Park contains a skateboard park that is of a reasonable size and quality and blends into the background with its tarmac with yellow ramps. Like the park in Hebden Bridge, Todmorden's park is enjoyed by those who use it.
In comparison to the skateboard parks in Hebden Bridge and Todmorden the park at Ripponden seems to be the poorer relation and is sadly lacking in size and usefulness. Although this park contains a sign to remind users to wear helmets, kneepads and elbow pads, it is the park most likely to suffer accidents, as the type of construction and design of the park doesn't offer as safe an area to play on. The ramps, with enough people, are movable, which increases the dangerous possibilities of accidents occurring.
All three skateboarding areas have succumbed to graffiti, which not only makes the skateboarding parks look ugly it also has a negative effect on the local surroundings. But with a rising trend in skateboard parks priority should always be on safety as accidents can and do happen
